Vivid Violet Valentine $1 Project

Valentine's Day is less than a month away, so it's time to get started on your Valentine crafting!

I found this standing wood heart at a craft store for just a buck or so and thought it would be fun to alter it as a small decor piece...


When I think of Valentine's Day, the colors that come to mind are soft pink, mauve, ivory, cream and deep red. I might be swayed to include lavender, if I stretch my color scheme preference a bit. I am not a big fan of purple, any shade of purple! Violet hues are just not colors that I find myself using often.

SO, I was DE-termined to use PURPLE as the focal color in this Valentine project. And not a mamby-pamby safe, soft, silvery lavender either. I wanted to use a bright violet shade of purple - no "shrinking violet" here! But since I wanted the finished project to be balanced color-wise, and have a romantic vintage feel, I selected more traditional Valentine colors as accents.

I removed the heart at the center, and sprayed the remainder of the piece using Stephanie Barnard Sprays! in Grape. You will be amazed at how well the Sprays! cover with just a quick spritz! And the colors are SO rich and SO bright! The Stephanie Barnard Sprays! are perfect to use on any porous surface where you want bright, intense color, but no shimmer. I sanded the heart to distress the edges of the frame and soften the ink a bit. To add some "texture" I used Stephanie Barnard Chocolate Premium Dye Ink to stamp some background designs...



The wood center, small flowers, cotton trim and a scrap of white cardstock were all tinted using Bubblegum Sprays!

The sentiment was stamped on the sprayed cardstock once it had dried using the Chocolate Dye Ink. The edges were lightly distressed using the Chocolate Dye Ink applied with the ColorBox Stylus & Tip and then it was adhered in the center of the wood heart...



The flowers started out white, and were colored using Bubblegum and Strawberry Sprays! A dusting of Sprinkles! Chunky Glitter make them shine!


The cotton lace trim was added around the heart, while a mauve elastic trim was added around the base...



A purple pearl head pin, a pretty mauve satin bow and a sprinkling of more glitter around the outer edges of the pink heart provide the finishing touches.

I used a HOST of Beacon Adhesives on this project as using the RIGHT glue really makes the process easy-peasy. Beacon's 3-in-1 Glue is a quick tack adhesive so it was perfect for adhering the flowers and sentiment. Fabri-Tac sits on top of fabrics and trims instead of sinking into the weave, which made it a good choice for adhering the trims. Decoupage Gloss Sealer is a quick way to adhere the chunky glitter - spritz once to adhere, let dry, the spritz lightly again to seal. And Fast Finish Decoupage was used to add the glitter around the edges of the heart as it dries quickly and crystal clear.

        Tami, I love this heart! I like the color purple, but don't often use it in my crafting. I'm glad you did, thought, as now it has inspired me to try something purple in my Valentine decor. Luv your $1 makeovers, gives me all kinds of ideas!
