Molding Mats and Bathroom Tissue - You've got to try it!

I know what your thinking... toilet paper, really? YES! This is one of my "I am too cheap, and too lazy to go out and buy molding paste" moments. Yes, cheapness and laziness can be the mother of invention.

So, I was thinking what can I press a molding mat into? And somehow it came to me, toilet paper. Now to look at my finished project, it is not screaming TP, but is sure is covered in it. There is a little tutorial at the end to show you how its done. Some tips for working with molded toilet paper:  after its dry, it takes ink great, but decoupage medium can tear it up, so layer on your medium quickly and don't go over it a lot (like tissue paper). The dried TP feels like handmade paper and looks that way too, so try leaving it plain to show more softness and texture. I also found I could un-layer it, to make it thinner too. I am really excited about... toilet paper and now wondering what else can I use it for?

This canvas is a little tribute to my Roller Derby team, and yes, that's me at the bottom. All of the image transfers were created with Craft Attitude transfer material.

Here is a torn square of molded toilet paper that is covered in decoupage, then lightly inked using Donna Salazar Mix'd Media Inx in Midnight the Molding Mat is "Spots"

This TP mold is just decoupaged on, but not layered over the top. It gives a nice texture and softness. The ink is Colorbox Pumpkin Spice.

Here is where I went over it with some glossy decoupage, then lightly went over with more Mix'd Media Inx in Midnight- The Molding Mat is "Flutterbys"

For this part I peeled off some of the TP to make this piece thinner, and then decoupaged it around the edge. The Ink is Mix'd Media Midnight and the stencil is Crafters Workshop.

A close up of some of the elements together:

I hope you will give my toilet paper method a try! Here is the video:

  1. Hi Denise, Over here in the UK one of our crafters Ali Reeves is well known for her crafting with everyday items including toilet paper. She does a similar technique with masks but she runs the whole thing through a dry embossing machine to wring out the water. I'm wondering wether it would be possible to do the same thing with your moulding masks. Theresa x
