Home & Family Canvas Collage

Hello, hostess Tami here with an altered canvas featuring LOTS of inks and more from ClearSnap...

This project would make a thoughtful gift for mom; I'm getting double duty from mine. I'm gifting it to my sister-in-law for a Mother's Day/House Warming gift.

When you are creating a collaged project begin by thinking about it in terms of "layers". The more layers you add to a collage, the more depth and dimension it will have.

LAYER #1
I began my collage by applying various colors of Donna Salazar Mix'd Media Inx to different areas of the canvas using paper towels. Just rip off about a 1/4 of a paper towel, wad it up, dip in ink, then use to apply the ink to the canvas in a circular motion. Continue with different colors of ink until the canvas is covered. Use a darker color around the edges of the canvas to distress it.

LAYER #2
Next, Mix'd Media Inx was used along with the Jumbo Rollagraph Handle and Jumbo Design Wheel to add a design to the background. I selected a script pattern. At this point, the inks were heat set.

LAYER #3
I used the ColorBox Stylus & Tips to apply several shades of Mix'd Media Inx to a branch stamp. I stamped the branch design twice at the upper left corner and once at the lower right. Then the designs were embossed with Top Boss Clear Embossing Powder to add shine and dimension.

LAYER #4
I used a template and Mix'd Media Inx applied using the Stylus & Tips to add a damask design to any empty areas of the background; then heatset.

LAYER #5
The photo was added to the collage.

LAYER #6
Stamped embellishments were added; the postcard, butterfly, stamp and postmark were all stamped and embossed on manila, then painted using Mix'd Media Inx blended with a little water. They were cut out and adhered to the canvas. To paint with inks, add a few drops from Reinker Bottle, or tap inkpad on foam plate, then mix ink with a bit of water.

LAYER #7
Lastly, several other embellishments were added to complete the canvas: a definition of "home" torn from a vintage dictionary, antiqued silver butterfly and dragonfly charms and an old key tied with some vintage seam binding. A tiny "family" tag was hung from the bow using baker's twine and a pearl corsage pin.

I was happy with the collage at this point; but you might want to keep going and add MORE layers to YOUR project.

    1. This is a very intriguing canvas! At first glance I thought the background was a map! Then I read the tutorial and LOVE this idea! I am definitely going to have to give this a try! Great idea for a combo gift. Thanks for the great tutorial so I might even be able to have it come out with the great results that you did! TFS!
